Every summer, my middle brother and I take ourselves off to a concert, just because we can.
He is the one I credit with inspiring my love of music, and our tastes are remarkably similar. So with that in mind, we choose an event each year and off we go. This year, our choice was Yes, the English progressive rock band that made their biggest mark back in the 1970’s. They’ve been around in one incarnation or another for decades since then, but there was nothing quite like those original albums of thirty-odd years ago.
After two or three months of thinking about it, I finally got around to ordering the tickets yesterday. Last night, the tour was cancelled. It turns out frontman Jon Anderson has been diagnosed with respiratory problems, and has been advised not to work for at least six months.
It’s another grim reminder that the members of the rock bands that inspired us in our youth are now close to or in their sixties, and things like this tend to happen when you least expect it.
Better a little wheezing than a broken hip, I suppose. Get well, Mr. Anderson.
