Oh, Smile, Damn It!

I completely understand why The Aforementioned Wonderful Man prefers to focus his camera on wildlife rather than people. People are a pain in the ass.

At a retirement party for one of my old bosses, I roamed with camera in hand, trying to capture candid moments. A great mix of people had gathered, from white-haired former managers long gone from the company, to corporate whipper-snappers to some of my fellow part-timers. It had marvelous potential.

Trouble was, when they saw the camera, they had this subtle way of turning their backs.

Part of me hoped that with one more drink, they’d be loosened up and a little more willing. But, no. They kept looking down, turning away and generally avoiding my lens. Even though I was in a festive setting, I started to think about news photographers and how bloody good they are at what they do. Telling stories with words gives me great pleasure. Telling stories with pictures? Of people? It’s damn hard work.

I captured a few memorable moments, but nothing spectacular. Today, I’ll go back to writing. If I get out the camera, I’ll maybe focus it on a Robin or a Blue Jay. At least when they fly away, I won’t take it personally.
